Don’t miss your chance to participate in one of the field trips on the afternoon of Tuesday 11 June.

They all have limits on numbers.

Cycling Tour

Limited to 20 pax

The conference cycling tour will start at end by the Maitai River, a shot walk from the Rutherford Hotel. The tour will showcase the existing and proposed cycle facilities that give Nelson its reputation as a cycle city, taking around 1.5hrs and covering 15km. The key highlights of the tour include:

  • Experiencing the existing Great Taste Trail cycleway connection through the city, hearing about its history and the proposed urban roundabout retrofits along the way.

  • Discuss the path to permanence for the Nelson South Streets for People walking and cycling improvements

  • Ride over to the beach at Tāhunanui, hearing about the Muritai Street separated cycleway, the new Te Pa Harakeke playground and the proposed Rocks Road active mode transformation

  • Head back to the city past the port and along the Maitai River shared paths.

Trail comfort bikes provided.

Upgrade to a trail comfort e-bike @ $50 + GST.


Walking Tour

Limited to 20 pax

The conference walking tour will start and end at the Rutherford Hotel, taking in the past and future of Nelson City and its transport network. The walk is expected to take 1.5 hours, with a distance of around 4km. The key highlights of the walking tour include:

  • Looking down upon the city centre and learning about the history of Whakatū Nelson and the success of the pedestrianised Trafalgar Street

  • Hearing about the plans to revolutionise a key centre city street into a people focused linear park along Bridge Street

  • Debriefing on the construction of a new shared path and cycle facility on Domett Street alongside the Maitai River

  • Exploring the Botanical Reserve, the site of New Zealand’s first game of rugby

  • Walking along the banks of the Matai River, discussing the connection for people to the Port, proposed city centre playground and proposed bus interchange

  • Witnessing the new Ebus electric buses in action at the current bus interchange


Bus Tour

Limited to 20 pax

The bus and walking tour is expected to take 2.5 hours and will start at the interim eBus city centre interchange on Bridge Street and catch the electric buses to Richmond. On the way the host will point out and discuss the new bus services and infrastructure which started in August last year in addition to other traffic calming and mode shift projects. Once in Richmond, there will be a walking tour of the changes that have been made to Richmond town centre which includes:

  • The main street upgrade with an inverted crest

  • Separated cycle lanes on arterial routes

  • Stormwater and shared path corridors in new developments

  • Concepts for a separated cycle roundabout.
